Concrete vs. Terracotta Roof Tiles: Homeowner Experience

Concrete and terracotta tiles are staples of Australian architecture, but they require different levels of care as they age.

Concrete Roof Tiles

Concrete roof tiles are made from cement, sand and water. They’re strong and affordable, but they rely on a protective coating to resist weathering over time.

Terracotta Roof Tiles

Terracotta roof tiles are made from fired clay, offering long-term durability and colour stability, making them a premium roofing option.

Concrete vs. Terracotta Durability

Concrete roof tiles rely on a protective coating to stay moisture-resistant. UV exposure and weather can wear this layer down, leading to surface erosion.

Terracotta tiles have long-lasting colour and excellent durability. Glazed versions offer added water resistance, while unglazed tiles provide a more traditional finish but may need more regular inspection.

Concrete tiles are heavy and require a strong roof frame, and even small issues with battens or alignment can allow water ingress between tiles. Many tiled roofs will also require professional rebedding and pointing, along with ongoing pointing and roof repairs, to maintain ridge capping integrity and prevent leaks.

Concrete vs. Terracotta, What Do Reddit Users Say?

Homeowners on Reddit shared that while both materials perform well, concrete tiles tend to require more frequent attention over time, as coatings wear down or tiles become brittle.

Terracotta is often viewed as a longer-lasting option, though it comes with a higher upfront cost.

Reddit users said issues like cracked tiles or poor detailing can lead to costly roof repairs.

Tiles are always going to crack/need replacing over time. I prefer terracotta to concrete, but terracotta tiles used to be very popular and are now less so, which means that products you used to have are being discontinued.

If you’ve got the budget, sure. Terracotta is the premium product but changing up your entire roof from concrete to terracotta will cost you more than the solar itself in most instances, and in my opinion, isn’t worth the premium difference vs cost.

Roof tiles like this are extremely durable, but also more expensive. Harder to install and the roof has to be designed for the additional dead load from clay tiles.

They are more common in certain climate zones and regions with local availability. Just using clay tile for the look is ill-advised. Clay tile roof generally needs more maintenance but can last a long time if it is in the appropriate climate, properly installed, and maintained.

25 years for the material itself before it becomes brittle and un walkable plus by then the manufacture is probably out of business sand replacements can’t be found. Clay is way better

Terracotta, they last a lot longer than cement and require less ongoing attention. Steer clear of any flat profile tiles, too. Flat = weak spot.

Terracotta tiles are lighter and may reduce the structural size of supporting components vs concrete tiles

In some states sarking under tiles is still not required. Very normal to see light in a tiled roof. Water damage could be a broken tile. Terracotta tiles are easy to break if walked on the wrong way.

Verdict:

Terracotta is seen as more durable and premium, while concrete is cheaper but needs more ongoing maintenance.
